Since it was founded in 1295, Pilsen has been a busy trade center, located at the crossroads of two important trade routes that link the Czech lands with the German cities of Nuremburg and Regensburg. Beer has a long tradition in Pilsen, dating back to 1307. You can visit the Pilsner Urquell Brewery, a tour that is a must for beer fans. The light “lager beer” was “born” in Pilsen (Plzeň in Czech) during 1842 and became known as Pilsner Urquell. The Pilsner beer was so different from other types of beer at that time so it became a new type of beer simply called “Pilsner” or “Pils”. Nowadays, 70% of all beers around the world are of the Pilsner type. During the tour of the Pilsner Urquell Brewery, you have the chance to taste golden Pilsner Urquell beer. After the tour you can enjoy a typical Czech meal in the Pilsner Urquell Brewery restaurant. You will also have the opportunity to appreciate sights in the Old Town of Pilsen, where St. Bartholomew’s Cathedral boasts a 120-meter high tower, the highest in the country. The Moorish Revival Great Synagogue is the second largest in Europe.

Karlstejn Castle is one of the most famous castles in the Czech Republic. It looms over a picturesque village with a steep, narrow road leading to the Gothic lover’s paradise. The imposing structure, built for Bohemian King and Holy Roman Emperor Charles IV in 1348, housed the crown jewels of the Holy Roman Empire until 1420. Charles IV also kept his own personal relics and the Bohemian royal insignia here.
