You will spot Melnik Chateau, where Princess Ludmila often stayed in the 10th century with her son Vaclav, the future patron saint of the Czech lands. The last wife of Holy Roman Emperor and Bohemian King Charles IV resided here, too. Next take a good look at the picturesque ruin of Kokorin Castle, situated on a steep rock formation in a nature reserve. Dating from 1320, it was called a “cursed castle” by Emperor Ferdinand III after the Thirty Years’ War because it was no longer possible to keep it in good condition. Kokorin has been in ruins since the end of the 19th century. Kokorin Castle served as inspiration for Romantic poets and painters, such as poet Karel Hynek Macha, whose poem May (Maj) is the most celebrated verse in the Czech lands, and painter Josef Manes.
Soon you fly over Houska Castle, founded between 1270 and 1280 by Czech ruler Premysl Otakar II. Notice the elements of a Renaissance chateau as well as the Gothic traits of this cultural gem. You will view what has been called since the 1970s Macha Lake, a body of water founded Charles IV in 1366. Macha even visited the lake six times. Bezdez Castle, also the inspiration for many works of art and literature, is nearby. This romantic national cultural monument was built by Premysl Otakar II in the 1360s. Charles IV, who founded Charles University, the Charles Bridge and Prague’s New Town, often stayed here. Houska became a ruin at the beginning of the 19th century. Macha drew inspiration from this castle, too. According to a legend, monks have buried a secret treasure here.
