Prague – Auschwitz – Prague Day Trips

Located approximately 500 kilometers east of Prague, Auschwitz I and Auschwitz II – Birkenau were designed by high-ranking SS officer Heinrich Himmler and were responsible for the deaths of at least 960,000 Jews; 75,000 Poles and 19,000 Roma. Visitors can practically see and feel the atrocities of the Nazi terror as the cruelty of the era rips through one’s heart and stabs one’s soul.

Visiting Auschwitz Concentration Camp

Visitors will join a group tour conducted by local tour guide provided by the Auschwitz Memorial. The guide is included in the Museum entrance fee of 40 PLN / person. You will also receive headphones. The tour of Auschwitz Museum takes places at Auschwitz I. Then you will go by a bus provided by the Memorial to Auschwitz II, where the gas chambers were located. The tour of both camps takes about 3.5 hours. Because we will leave Prague early in the morning, we will arrive at Auschwitz in time for one of the first tours, when it is not so busy. The guided tours are in English and are held daily all year round at 10.30 a.m., 11.30 a.m., 12.30 p.m. and 1.20 p.m. The sites are not open on January 1, January 27, December 25 or Easter Sunday and also may be closed due to an official state visit or ceremony.

Auschwitz I & Auschwitz II – Birkenau: Concentration Camp in Poland

During the Holocaust the majority of European Jews were killed at Auschwitz-Birkenau. By the middle of 1942, there was mass gassing of Jews using Zyklon-B at Auschwitz, where extermination was conducted on an industrial scale. Some estimate that three million people were gassed, shot, burned or died of starvation and disease. Nine out of ten were Jews. In addition, Roma, Soviet POWs and prisoners of all nationalities died in the gas chambers. Between May 14 and July 8, 1944, some 437,402 Hungarian Jews were deported to Auschwitz in 148 trains. This was probably the largest single mass deportation during the Holocaust. The private diaries of Joseph Goebbels and Heinrich Himmler, unearthed from the secret Soviet archives, show that Adolf Hitler personally ordered the mass extermination of the Jews during a meeting of the Nazi German regional governors in the chancellery. As Goebbels wrote, “With regards to the Jewish question, the Fuhrer decided to make a clean sweep …”

Sign “Arbeit macht frei”

Upon arriving at the museum, visitors may feel overwhelmed at the sight of the main gate with the inscription “Arbeit macht frei “or “Work brings freedom,” a sick and cynical slogan for a place where perhaps 1.5 million victims were murdered. Take a look at the small square – it was here that the SS military band would play marches. Imagine prisoners walking through this gate daily to go to work, some returning 12 hours later, others not returning at all.

On July 2, 1947 the Polish parliament established the Auschwitz-Birkenau State Museum on the grounds of the two extant parts of the camps Auschwitz I and Auschwitz II-Birkenau. The site was added to the UNESCO World Heritage List in 1979.
